Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Mirpada, a locality in Bally Assembly constituency, Howrah district, has been facing a persistent waterlogging problem due to inadequate drainage facilities. The issue has caused daily inconvenience to residents and raised concerns about health risks linked to stagnant water. Despite multiple complaints and letters submitted by locals over the years, no effective solution has been implemented to address the problem.
On Monday, officials from the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) arrived in Mirpada to conduct an inspection of the drainage system and evaluate the waterlogging situation. At the same time, MLA Dr. Rana Chatterjee also visited the area to oversee the situation. However, local women protested by blocking the MLA’s entry, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of concrete action from authorities. The protesters prevented the MLA from entering the locality, and he left without making any statements.
The waterlogging has significantly impacted the residents' day-to-day life and increased the risk of waterborne diseases. The presence of KMDA officials indicates steps toward assessing the problem for future remedial measures. The situation remains unresolved, with locals continuing to demand urgent improvements in drainage infrastructure to prevent recurring water accumulation.
